I could go on. But let’s leave it at that for now. To rural readers, and perhaps to many others, most of those tips will have seemed obvious to the point of banality.

Yet the very ordinariness of this advice intrigues me. Once upon a time, perhaps just a single generation ago, all of this would have been common knowledge. Everyone would have known how to deal with farm animals or read a rural landscape. And everyone would have had some sense of how to deal with the discomforts of outdoors.

For example (to throw in another top tip that has just occurred to me): if you come home with frozen toes, you need to thaw them out – typically by running a cold tap over them until they can feel that it is cold – before letting them anywhere near warm water. Otherwise you will experience excruciating agonies and, possibly, chilblains. Even when I was a child, half a century ago, everyone knew that. Now it’s the kind of arcane trivia that gets aired on QI. And to my children, to whom I am constantly trying to impart such knowledge, it’s the kind of advice that’s entirely pointless. They know a far smarter solution: don’t get your feet cold in the first place.

They are, however, missing out.
